POSITION SUMMARY

The Database Administrator, BlackBerry Service Technology, supports a host of RDMS systems employed in the BlackBerry Operation's infrastructure. Working closely with our Development, Testing, Storage Operations and UNIX Platform Systems Administration teams, the Database Administrator  delivers best in class 7x24 operational support and proactive, robust design for our mission critical databases. 

Research In Motion is experiencing tremendous growth in the regions and expanding its operational capabilities. This individual contributor uses his/her extensive background to provide technical guidance catering to the design, development and architecture of the production database infrastructure in a team environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate's responsibilities will include:

• Accountable for supporting the ongoing, 7x24 database systems, including maintaining system availability, improving performance, and assisting in change and new system design and deployment
• Performs design and architecture work where applicable as per application requirements
• Support a regional environment with other DBA teams across the globe
• Self starter and motivator with high performance objectives that aligns with the BlackBerry long term strategic objectives and the goals of RIM  
• Be an expert in the Relational database technology especially Oracle platform hosted on HP-UX operating environment
• Participate and assist in the development lifecycle of initiatives

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Technical aptitude and business acumen with a consultative approach to solution selling
• Entrepreneur spirit with strong planning and project execution skills
• Demonstrated ability to proactively build and manage relationships
• Ability to coach and lead in the database technical domain in a collaborative approach 
• Exceptional presentation skills and the ability to handle large audiences are a must
• Strong communicator (Oral, Verbal, and Written) with ability to persuade individuals and groups
• Excellent technical skills with strong analytical and diagnostics background
• Relevant experience as a technology consultant in the database area
• Relevant experience working in large Enterprise IT Organizations (eg. Infrastructure, Operations Support and Administration, Database Production Support )
• Strong organization and time management skills
• Ability to draw on technical skills based on experience and resolve issues 
• Ability to use metric in an operation environment to suggest and implement continuous improvement
• Act as a steward for the database services team globally 
• Ability to thrive in a challenging and high pressure environment
• Quick learner and a high energy to drive results
• Bachelor Degree in IT/Software/MIS is minimum education requirement

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Solid knowledge of IT infrastructure, including background in the following: 

• Technical architecture of IT solutions
• Good experience with sql/plsql optimization, and working with development teams on application tuning
• HP-UX server management including Superdome (PA-RISC & Itanium)
• Oracle databases 9i to 11g , data guard and RAC
• Veritas VCS for remote and local failover
• Oracle Database for high transaction and performance environment
• Technical understanding of HA solution
• Technical understanding of Disaster Recovery solution
• Technical understanding of database backup and recovery requirement
• Sound knowledge in an operation conference bridge setting performance trouble shooting 
• Drive issues to resolution in production environments
